As office life enters into a new stage of modernity, we’re always looking for ways to improve how automatically the office functions and improve our efficiency…enter The Internet of Things.

As defined by the wonderful world of Wikipedia, the term, Internet of Things refers to a “network of physical objects or “things” embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or connected devices. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure.” How then, can the internet of things be used to make your office epic?

Keep Your Plants Healthy

A little foliage in the office, can help to create a much more natural, serene space, but we so often forget to water our plants, leaving them a little forlorn, which can leave your office looking in a sorry state. So why not set monitors to text you when your plants need water, or fertilizer, or even sunlight?

Lock Your Doors

There are few things more frustrating than losing your office keys, and equally frustrating is having to change your locks after less than amicable splits with your staff. The answer, purchase a smart door lock, and update your key codes on your smartphone, even when you’re out of the office.

Keep the Water Topped Up

Finding out about a leak in a fish tank or water dispenser too late can cause real problems in the office environment, and is a stress that you really don’t need. Water sensors can check the water levels in your office, and notify you of flood alerts as they happen, saving you a considerable amount of time and money down the line.

Control Your Climate

Keeping the office at the right temperature is hard enough when your staff are around, but when everyone has gone home in the evening or the weekend, energy can be wasted and bills can rack up. Programming thermostats for the nights and weekend can cut your energy bills dramatically and stock you air conditioning and heating empty cubicles.

Stay Secure

Many offices are home to some very expensive equipment, and indeed some very sensitive files. Whilst away from the office, it is easy to worry about the safety of its contents. Installing networked cameras that can stream video to mobile devices, allows you to keep an eye on your office, giving you peace of mind when away.

Keep the Room Shaded

By programming window shades to move with the sun, offices can drastically reduce the energy wasted and also keep your employees safe from the annoying glare of the sun, or getting the light they need on a dark day.

Answer the Doorbell 24/7

Missing important visitors or deliveries can be really disruptive and can seem highly unprofessional at the best of times, but sometimes you don’t have to be in the office to answer the door bell. Purchasing a special doorbell will allow users to see and talk to delivery drivers or other visitors via your smartphone, even when out of the office.
